Finding a place

Documents landlords commonly request

The paperwork Berlin landlords expect — and how to prepare a strong application.

5 min read ·

The standard application pack

Landlords often want everything in one PDF before inviting you to a viewing. Prepare a folder in advance — speed wins in competitive Kieze.

  • Copy of passport or ID
  • SCHUFA-Bonitätsauskunft or alternative proof of creditworthiness
  • Employment contract or proof of income (last 3 payslips)
  • Mietschuldenfreiheitsbescheinigung — confirmation no rent debt at previous place
  • Selbstauskunft — tenant self-disclosure form (income, pets, smoking)
  • Certificate of enrollment — for students

How renting.berlin helps

Listings show which documents are required. Seeker profiles let you signal SCHUFA, Anmeldung needs, income, and languages — so landlords know you are serious before messaging.

Use messages to send documents only after you trust the contact. Never pay deposits to unknown accounts without a signed contract and in-person or video viewing.

Students & freelancers

Students: enrollment certificate, blocked account or scholarship letter, sometimes a parental guarantee.

Freelancers: last tax assessment (Steuerbescheid), client contracts, bank statements. Freelancer visa holders should show Finanzamt registration if available.
